For its 2027 edition, the Sony Future Filmmaker Awards is expanding its scope by adding a new Immersive category. This addition invites creators to submit short films using advanced immersive formats such as 3D, 180°, and 360° video.
Now in its fifth year, the Sony Future Filmmaker Awards highlight and reward filmmakers who are innovatively shaping the future of cinema. Organized by Creo in collaboration with Sony, the program aims to transform filmmakers’ potential into a driving force for their careers by recognizing outstanding talent and connecting them with industry professionals. The newly introduced Immersive category, sponsored by Meta, focuses on pioneering and experiential storytelling.
This category encourages short films that immerse viewers with formats like 3D, 180°, and 360° video. As these technologies are increasingly transforming the landscape of modern filmmaking, this new category provides a platform for bold and experiential storytelling, spanning all genres—from fiction to non-fiction, live action to animation. It offers filmmakers an opportunity to explore the creative potential of immersive formats.
Filmmakers who make it to the shortlist will be invited to Los Angeles to participate in an exclusive industry program from June 7-10, 2027. This event will be held at the iconic Sony Pictures Studios in Culver City and will conclude with a gala ceremony on June 10, 2027. Over four days, these filmmakers will engage in interactive sessions and masterclasses, diving deep into Hollywood’s core workings.
Guided by Sony Pictures executives, these sessions will cover critical aspects of the industry, including production, film acquisition, and collaboration with press and publicists, as well as cutting-edge technology demonstrations, animation techniques, and the art of soundtracking. This unique experience offers filmmakers a chance to build meaningful connections with industry leaders and fellow creators globally, becoming part of a vibrant international filmmaker community while honing their skills. Distinguished by this unparalleled opportunity, the awards inspire, equip, and empower the next generation of filmmakers.
