Sony Future Filmmaker Awards 2027 Expands with New Immersive CategoryThe Sony Future Filmmaker Awards 2027 are introducing a new Immersive category, inviting short films created using 3D, 180°, and 360° video formats.

Now celebrating its fifth year, the awards honor filmmakers who are innovating the future of cinema. Established by Creo in collaboration with Sony, the event aims to transform potential into kinetic energy by spotlighting emerging filmmakers and linking them directly with industry leaders. This year’s introduction of the Immersive category, presented by Meta, focuses on pioneering, experiential narratives.

The Immersive category embraces short films that engage viewers through immersive formats such as 3D, 180°, and 360° video. As these technologies redefine modern filmmaking, the category celebrates dynamic, experiential storytelling across genres—whether fiction or non-fiction, live-action or animation. It offers filmmakers a platform to explore these creative possibilities.

Finalists will be flown to Los Angeles for an exclusive industry program from June 7-10, 2027, at the renowned Sony Pictures Studios in Culver City, culminating in a gala ceremony on June 10, 2027. During the four-day experience, participants will dive into Hollywood’s core through interactive sessions and masterclasses.

This unparalleled prize aims to inspire and empower the next wave of filmmakers.

Filmmakers are invited to submit their short films in six categories:

  • The Fiction category seeks narrative-driven submissions that tell an original story or event, with a duration of 5 to 20 minutes. The winner from a shortlist of 10 filmmakers will receive Sony Digital Imaging equipment, a Meta VR device, and a $5,000 (USD) cash prize.
  • The Non-Fiction category is open to films that are primarily factual, between 5 and 20 minutes long. The winner, chosen from 10 shortlisted filmmakers, will receive Sony Digital Imaging equipment, a Meta VR device, and a $5,000 (USD) cash prize.
  • The Immersive category celebrates films that use formats like 3D, 180°, and 360° video to place viewers within the story. Submissions should be 5–20 minutes and can include any genre, from fiction to documentary, live-action to animation. One winner and up to two shortlisted entries will be selected, with the winner receiving a Meta VR device and a $5,000 (USD) cash prize.
  • The Animation category welcomes animated films between 2 and 20 minutes, using techniques such as stop-motion, motion graphics, computer animation, and more. The winner, selected from five finalists, will receive Sony Digital Imaging equipment, a Meta VR device, and a $5,000 (USD) cash prize.
  • The Student category is for filmmakers enrolled in a diploma or degree-level film course at a registered institution globally. The shortlist, selected based on geographic diversity, features films 5 to 20 minutes long in any genre. The winner and their institution will receive Sony Digital Imaging equipment, with the winner also receiving a Meta VR device.
  • The Future Format category encourages filmmakers to explore innovative storytelling in response to a technical brief. This year, participants are invited to create shorts for vertical viewing (9:16 aspect ratio) between 2 and 5 minutes long, using any device and genre. One winner will be invited to the Los Angeles workshop in June 2027 and will receive a $2,500 (USD) cash prize and Sony Digital Imaging equipment.

Category winners will be chosen by the judging panel. Winners in Fiction, Non-Fiction, Immersive, Animation, and Student categories will be announced at the Los Angeles ceremony on June 10, 2027, while the Future Format winner and commended filmmakers will be revealed in April 2027.

Returning to this year’s event is the Sustainability Prize, established by Creo and Sony, which highlights a short film that creatively addresses environmental, accessibility, diversity, equality, and inclusion issues. The winner will receive a $5,000 (USD) cash prize, Sony Digital Imaging equipment, and promotion through Sony Future Filmmaker Awards channels and website.
