The Association of Photographers (AOP) has recently revealed the victors of its annual Student Awards, a prestigious competition that highlights outstanding photographic work from students enrolled in 21 different photography programs across the UK. These programs range from Higher National Diplomas (HND) to Master’s degrees. This year’s contest, marking the 41st edition, featured three categories: People, Places, and Things, with Gold and Silver awards for each, and an overall winner.
**Best in Show**
Rupert Allen, a BA student specializing in Photojournalism and Documentary Photography at the University of Gloucestershire, earned the Best in Show title for his compelling series “Church of Coal.” This series captivated the judges with its narrative depth and sensitive portrayal, as noted by judge Eleanor Harrison, who praised Allen’s exceptional use of black and white photography for storytelling.
Allen’s award-winning project involved using large-format cameras to document portraits of both current and former coal miners at the last operating drift colliery in Western Europe, situated in South Wales. In recognition of his achievement, Allen received a Fujifilm prize package valued at £2,500 and a one-year subscription to Capture One Studio. Lauren Drage, Fujifilm’s Marketing Manager, expressed the company’s commitment to supporting emerging photographers through initiatives like the AOP Student Awards, emphasizing the importance of fostering creativity and innovation in the field.
Allen collaborated with the National Union of Miners (NUM) in Pontypridd and the National Museum Wales to explore the fate of the miners and collieries, as well as their adaptation in the 21st century. He stated, “Listening to their stories and capturing their current reality has offered insight into the true experiences of these individuals, revealing what has transpired and how some have managed to overcome the challenges faced by industrial Britain. With time running out for many of these individuals, their stories risk fading into obscurity, much like the remnants of the mines they once worked.”
**Category Winners**
In addition to his Best in Show accolade, Rupert Allen also secured the top spot in the People category. Anthony Porter, a BA (Hons) Professional Photography student at Edinburgh College, earned the Silver award for his work.
In the Places category, Lorena Bujalance Jimenez, an HND Photography student at the City of Glasgow College, clinched the Gold award. Gemma McNaughton, a BA Professional Photography student from Edinburgh College, was awarded Silver for her series “Against the Grain.”
In the Things category, Ed Butty, a Media and Communications student from the University of Leeds, took home the Gold award. Megan Dickson, a BA Photography student at Norwich University of the Arts, was the runner-up.
**Significance of the AOP Student Awards**
Isabelle Doran, CEO of The AOP, highlighted the importance of the AOP Student Awards in identifying and nurturing the next generation of photographic talent. She acknowledged the challenging task faced by professional judges in selecting finalists for the 2026 Awards, and commended their selections for showcasing confident and thoughtful visual perspectives across various subjects. “We eagerly anticipate celebrating the achievements of these talented individuals and are excited to see their future endeavors,” she added.
