Celebrating the 41st AOP Student Photography Awards Victors

The Association of Photographers (AOP) has revealed the talented winners of its 41st annual Student Awards, an event showcasing outstanding photographic achievements by students enrolled in 21 different photography programs across the UK, from Higher National Diploma (HND) to Master’s levels.

This year’s competition featured three categories: People, Places, and Things, each with Gold and Silver awards, as well as an overall champion. The Best in Show accolade was claimed by Rupert Allen, a Photojournalism and Documentary Photography student at the University of Gloucestershire. His compelling series, “Church of Coal,” achieved top honors.

Judge Eleanor Harrison praised Allen’s work, commenting on its “narrative maturity and sensitivity,” and applauding its “glorious use of black and white imagery for powerful visual storytelling.” Allen’s project employed large-format cameras to capture the lives of coal miners—active and retired—at the last operational drift colliery in Western Europe, situated in South Wales. As a reward for his success, Allen received a Fujifilm prize bundle valued at £2,500 and a year-long subscription to Capture One Studio.

Lauren Drage, Marketing Manager at Fujifilm Electronic Imaging, expressed enthusiasm for supporting the next wave of photographers, stating, “Fujifilm is thrilled to back the AOP Student Awards, fostering creativity and innovation in the field of photography.”

Allen’s series was developed in collaboration with the National Union of Miners (NUM) in Pontypridd and the National Museum Wales. It explored the fate of miners and collieries in the 21st century. His project took him on a journey across South Wales, seeking to understand the transformations and resilience of mining communities amidst industrial challenges.

In addition to winning Best in Show, Allen also triumphed in the People category. Anthony Porter, studying Professional Photography at Edinburgh College, secured the Silver award in the same category with his series, “Seeing the Unseen.”

In the Places category, Lorena Bujalance Jimenez from the City of Glasgow College claimed the Gold award with her piece “Swan Lake.” Meanwhile, Gemma McNaughton, from Edinburgh College, earned Silver for her work “Against the Grain.”

The Things category saw Ed Butty, a Media and Communications student at the University of Leeds, take home the Gold award for his series “Looking Down.” Megan Dickson, a BA Photography student at Norwich University of the Arts, was the runner-up with her piece “Falcon on Fist.”

Isabelle Doran, CEO of The AOP, emphasized the significance of the awards, stating, “Our annual AOP Student Awards are recognized as a benchmark for discovering the next generation of photographic talent. The professional judges had a monumental task narrowing down finalists for this year, and their selections reflect a profound confidence and thoughtfulness in the subjects they’ve captured.”
