Shvabe Unveils Russia’s First Anamorphic Cinema Lenses

In a major development for Russian cinema technology, Shvabe Holding, a division of Rostec State Corporation, introduced the first 80mm anamorphic cinema lens produced in Russia at the Innoprom 2026 exhibition. This milestone is the first instance where a Russian-made anamorphic lens has reached the prototype stage. The lens series, crafted by Lytkarinsky Optical Glass Plant (LZOS) under Shvabe, encompasses four distinct focal lengths:

  • 40mm
  • 60mm
  • 80mm (the first completed model, currently showcased)
  • 100mm

These lenses are characterized by a 2x anamorphic squeeze and come with a standard PL mount, which can be adapted to other mounts, making them suitable for digital cinema cameras.

Notable features of the lenses include:

  • An ultra-wide viewing angle without the typical distortion and vignetting seen in standard wide-angle spherical lenses.
  • Unique cinematic aesthetics, featuring characteristic bokeh and lens flares.
  • Exceptional image quality that differentiates them from many international options.
  • A distinctive concave shape on the front elements, a signature of the design, which facilitates horizontal squeezing while maintaining image quality.

“Crafting anamorphic lenses is a significant advancement by a local manufacturer for the Russian film industry. Besides the extended horizontal field and high-quality imagery, these lenses allow for unique cinematic effects. Our plan is to commence mass production next year, initially producing four sets. Test units will be available this year and offered to film studios at prices lower than foreign counterparts.” — Lev Borisov, Deputy General Director for Sales of Civilian Products at Shvabe Holding

Development Schedule & Release

  • July 2026: Public unveiling of the 80mm prototype.
  • Late 2026: Test units anticipated for studio testing.
  • 2027: Launch of full-scale production, beginning with an initial release of four sets.
