Celebrating Emerging Talent: Winners of the 41st AOP Student Photography Awards

The Association of Photographers (AOP) recently unveiled the victors of its esteemed annual Student Awards, an event that highlights outstanding photography created by students from 21 diverse photography courses throughout the UK, ranging from Higher National Diploma (HND) to Master’s programs.

In its 41st edition, this year’s AOP Student Awards challenged photographers to compete in three distinct categories: People, Places, and Things. Each category honored Gold and Silver winners, alongside an overall Best in Show award.

The standout talent of this year was Rupert Allen, a BA Photojournalism and Documentary Photography student at the University of Gloucestershire, who earned the Best in Show title for his series “Church of Coal.” This compelling series captivated all three judges, who praised its narrative maturity and the effective use of black-and-white photography to convey powerful visual stories. Allen’s project involved using large-format cameras to photograph both active and retired coal miners at the final working drift colliery in Western Europe, situated in South Wales. His achievements were rewarded with a Fujifilm prize kit valued at £2,500 and a yearly subscription to Capture One Studio.

Lauren Drage, Fujifilm Electronic Imaging’s Marketing Manager, expressed the company’s enthusiasm for supporting upcoming photographers through the AOP’s Student Awards in 2026, emphasizing a commitment to fostering creativity and innovation in photography and imaging.

Allen’s collaboration with the National Union of Miners (NUM) in Pontypridd and the National Museum Wales provided a platform to explore the impact of industrial decline in South Wales. Through personal stories, Allen documented how these communities navigated the challenges of the 21st century, aiming to preserve the memories of people and places now fading into obscurity.

In the category honors, Rupert Allen also secured the top spot in the People category, while Anthony Porter, a Professional Photography BA (Hons) student from Edinburgh College, claimed Silver. Lorena Bujalance Jimenez, an HND Photography student from City of Glasgow College, triumphed in the Places category, with Gemma McNaughton from Edinburgh College earning Silver. Finally, Ed Butty, a Media and Communications student from the University of Leeds, achieved Gold in the Things category, while Megan Dickson, a BA Photography student from Norwich University of the Arts, was the runner-up.

The AOP Student Awards are a cornerstone for identifying promising photography talent, according to Isabelle Doran, CEO of The AOP. The 2026 awards presented judges with a challenging task of selecting from exceptional still and moving images. This year’s finalists, with their diverse visual perspectives, have demonstrated both confidence and a deep understanding of their subjects, whether by challenging perceptions or celebrating authenticity. The AOP looks forward to celebrating these achievements and observing the future endeavors of these emerging photographers.
