In 2027, the Sony Future Filmmaker Awards will feature a brand-new Immersive category, inviting filmmakers to enter short films crafted in innovative formats such as 3D, 180°, and 360° video.
Now entering its fifth year, the Awards continue to highlight and honor filmmakers who are redefining the future of cinema. Created by Creo in collaboration with Sony, this initiative seeks to transform filmmaker potential into momentum by identifying talented individuals on the cusp of their careers and connecting them with the film industry. This year’s introduction of the Immersive category, presented by Meta, aims to celebrate daring and experiential narratives.
The Immersive category is open to short films designed to fully engage viewers using formats like 3D, 180°, and 360° video. As these technologies shape modern filmmaking, the category embraces daring narrative techniques across genres—be it fiction, non-fiction, live-action, or animation. It offers filmmakers a platform to push the boundaries of creative storytelling through immersive formats.
Shortlisted filmmakers will be invited to Los Angeles for an exclusive industry program from June 7 to 10, 2027, at the renowned Sony Pictures Studios in Culver City, culminating in a gala ceremony on June 10, 2027. Over the course of four days, participants will engage in interactive sessions and masterclasses, gaining insights into Hollywood’s inner workings.
Led by Sony Pictures executives, these sessions will cover various aspects of the film industry, from production and film acquisition to interactions with press and publicists, as well as showcasing the latest in technology, animation techniques, and soundtracking. This program offers a rare chance to build meaningful connections with global industry leaders and fellow creators, becoming part of a vibrant network of international filmmakers while enhancing their skills and knowledge. Distinguished by such a unique prize, the Awards are designed to inspire, equip, and empower the upcoming generation of filmmakers.
Filmmakers can submit their short films in six distinct categories:
- The Fiction category invites narrative-driven entries that present an original fictional story or event, requiring submissions to be between 5 and 20 minutes long. From a shortlist of 10 filmmakers, the winner will receive Sony Digital Imaging equipment, a Meta VR device, and a $5,000 USD cash prize.
- The Non-Fiction category accepts films primarily factual in content, also between 5 and 20 minutes in length. The winner, chosen from a shortlist of 10 filmmakers, will be awarded Sony Digital Imaging equipment, a Meta VR device, and a $5,000 USD cash prize.
- The Immersive category honors short films using immersive video to engage audiences. Entries must use one or more of the formats (3D, 180°, or 360° video), be 5–20 minutes long, and can cover any genre, from fiction to documentary, live action, or animation. One winner and a shortlist of up to two will be selected, with the winner receiving a Meta VR device and a $5,000 USD cash prize.
- The Animation category is open to animated films ranging from 2 to 20 minutes, utilizing any technique, such as stop-motion, motion graphics, or computer animation. The winner, selected from a shortlist of five filmmakers, will receive Sony Digital Imaging equipment, a Meta VR device, and a $5,000 USD cash prize.
- The Student category celebrates filmmakers enrolled in film courses at diploma or degree level worldwide. To ensure diverse global talent, institutions are selected by continent. Submissions must be 5 to 20 minutes long and can be any genre. From a shortlist of five filmmakers, the winner and their institution will receive Sony Digital Imaging equipment, with the winner also receiving a Meta VR device.
- The Future Format category challenges filmmakers with a technical brief that explores innovative storytelling. This year, entrants are asked to create shorts for vertical viewing (9:16 aspect ratio), with submissions ranging from 2 to 5 minutes in length, any genre, and any device. Winners, chosen from up to five commended entries, will join the four-day workshop in Los Angeles in June 2027 and receive a $2,500 USD cash prize and Sony Digital Imaging equipment.
The winners in each category will be selected by a judging panel. The winners of the Fiction, Non-Fiction, Immersive, Animation, and Student categories will be announced during the Los Angeles ceremony on June 10, 2027, while the Future Format category winner and recognized filmmakers will be announced in April 2027.
Also returning this year is the Sustainability Prize, created by Creo and Sony to highlight short films that creatively communicate the importance of environment, accessibility, diversity, equality, and inclusion in ensuring a positive future for the planet. The winner will receive a $5,000 USD cash prize, Sony Digital Imaging equipment, and promotion across the Sony Future Filmmaker Awards platforms and website.
