Celebrating Talent: Winners of the 41st AOP Student Photography Awards

The Association of Photographers (AOP) recently revealed the winners of its prestigious annual Student Photography Awards, recognizing outstanding work from students enrolled in 21 diverse photography courses across the UK. These programs range from Higher National Diplomas (HND) to Master’s degrees, showcasing a wide array of emerging talent.

This year marks the 41st edition of the competition, where students vied for top honors in three distinct categories: People, Places, and Things. Each category awarded Gold and Silver prizes, alongside an overall Best in Show recognition.

**Best in Show**
Rupert Allen, a BA student specializing in Photojournalism and Documentary Photography at the University of Gloucestershire, earned the Best in Show accolade with his compelling series, “Church of Coal.” This body of work, acclaimed for its mature narrative and sensitive portrayal, captivated all three judges. Eleanor Harrison, one of the judges, praised Allen’s use of black-and-white photography as a powerful tool for storytelling.

Allen’s project, which earned him a Fujifilm prize package valued at £2,500 and a one-year subscription to Capture One Studio, features large-format portraits of active and retired coal miners at Western Europe’s last operational drift colliery in South Wales. “Fujifilm is thrilled to support the upcoming generation of photographers through AOP’s Student Awards in 2026,” stated Lauren Drage, Fujifilm Electronic Imaging’s Marketing Manager. “We are committed to fostering creativity and innovation in photography and eagerly await the incredible talent that this competition will unveil.”

In partnership with the National Union of Miners and the National Museum Wales, Allen’s project explores the evolution of miners and collieries in the 21st century. He expressed, “Listening to their stories and capturing their current realities provided me with insight into their struggles and resilience—their stories must not fade into obscurity, much like the forgotten remnants of their workplaces.”

**Category Winners**
In addition to securing the top award, Rupert Allen also claimed Gold in the People category. The Silver prize went to Anthony Porter, a BA (Hons) student in Professional Photography at Edinburgh College, for his series “Seeing the Unseen.”

In the Places category, Lorena Bujalance Jimenez, an HND Photography student from City of Glasgow College, received Gold. Her work was followed by Gemma McNaughton, a BA student from Edinburgh College, who took Silver with her series “Against the Grain.”

In the Things category, Ed Butty, a Media and Communications student at the University of Leeds, won Gold with his series “Looking Down.” Megan Dickson, a BA Photography student from Norwich University of the Arts, earned Silver for “Falcon on Fist.”

**Why the AOP Student Awards Matter**
Isabelle Doran, CEO of The AOP, highlighted the significance of these awards: “Our annual AOP Student Awards are recognized as a benchmark for identifying emerging talent. The judges faced a monumental challenge in narrowing down the finalists for our 2026 awards, and their selection of images—both still and moving—demonstrates incredible skill and thoughtfulness. Whether depicting people, places, or things, the works of this year’s finalists challenge perceptions and celebrate authenticity. We are excited to celebrate their achievements and anticipate their future endeavors.”
