Celebrating the Winners of the 41st AOP Student Photography Awards

The Association of Photographers (AOP) recently revealed the victors of its annual Student Awards, an esteemed competition that honors the exceptional photographic creations of students enrolled in 21 different photography programs throughout the United Kingdom. These programs span a range of levels from Higher National Diploma (HND) to Master’s programs.

This year’s contest marked the 41st iteration of the AOP Student Awards, where participants showcased their talents in three distinct categories: People, Places, and Things. Each category featured a Gold and Silver winner, along with an overall Best in Show.

The Best in Show honor was awarded to Rupert Allen, a BA student specializing in Photojournalism and Documentary Photography at the University of Gloucestershire, for his project titled “Church of Coal.” Allen’s series impressed the judges with its narrative maturity and sensitivity, brilliantly employing black and white photography to convey compelling visual stories.

For his outstanding documentary work, Allen utilized large-format cameras to capture portraits of both active and retired coal miners at the last operational drift colliery in Western Europe, situated in South Wales. His achievements earned him a Fujifilm prize kit valued at £2,500 and an annual subscription to Capture One Studio.

Lauren Drage, Fujifilm Electronic Imaging’s Marketing Manager, expressed the company’s excitement to support emerging photographers through the AOP’s Student Awards in the coming years, emphasizing the importance of nurturing creativity and innovation in photography.

Allen’s series, created in collaboration with the National Union of Miners (NUM) in Pontypridd and the National Museum Wales, explores the fate of miners and collieries in the 21st century. His documentation provides a rare glimpse into the lives of people and places often overlooked, capturing stories before they fade from public memory much like the remnants of the once-thriving industrial sites.

In the awards categories, Rupert Allen also claimed the top spot in the People category, with Anthony Porter from Edinburgh College receiving Silver for his series “Seeing the Unseen.” In the Places category, Lorena Bujalance Jimenez, an HND Photography student at the City of Glasgow College, clinched the Gold award, while Gemma McNaughton from Edinburgh College earned Silver for “Against the Grain.” The Things category saw Ed Butty from the University of Leeds secure Gold with his series “Looking Down,” and Megan Dickson from Norwich University of the Arts followed up with Silver for “Falcon on Fist.”

Additional finalists included Mariam Yaqub, Tom Gormley, Jianuan Xu, and several other talented individuals, showcasing a diverse array of perspectives and creative expressions.

Isabelle Doran, CEO of The AOP, highlighted the significance of the Student Awards as a benchmark for discovering the next generation of photography talent. The judges faced a challenging task in selecting the finalists for the 2026 AOP Student Awards, given the impressive array of entries. The competition’s finalists captured a wide range of subjects with confidence and thoughtful consideration, challenging perspectives and celebrating authenticity.

The AOP Student Awards continue to be a pivotal platform for young photographers, and the organization eagerly anticipates the future achievements of this year’s participants.
